Luis J. Gomez denies Story Warz is rigged
He says the game is not real, and that is kind of the point.
Somebody told Luis J. Gomez that Story Warz is fake. He answered.
The spark came from Matthew Sobalvarro, who tagged @luisjgomez and wrote that the show is "100% setup lol you fucked up my guy". Gomez did not let it sit. He fired back asking what the accusation even was, whether the claim is that he picks and chooses when to win and lose and acts the whole time, and pointed out that just letting the game play out would be a lot less work.
Then came the line that does the damage for him. Gomez wrote that the game is not real, and that it is just a format for him and Big Jay Oakerson to be funny.
How he actually plays it
In a longer follow up, Gomez laid out his process like a man who has been asked this before, because he says he has. He says the stories are mostly simple benign moments, not a thousand unbelievable tales, and that once a subject is set it only takes him a few minutes to come up with a few. He says he is still living life and has new stories every day.
The numbers are the part worth keeping. Gomez says he and Jay submit three to five stories per episode and only one or two get used, which has left hundreds of leftovers in what he calls a very large database of submitted stories. He also says they have never repeated a subject.
He credits practice for the rest. He plays every week, he knows how to reword stories to hide them from Jay, and he says he uses AI to ask him questions so he can remember stories on a specific subject. His own verdict on that habit is that he takes it too seriously.
The real story
The denial and the confession are the same sentence. Gomez is not arguing that Story Warz is a pure competition, he is arguing that nobody should have expected it to be one, because the scoring exists to set up punchlines. By his own description the fun of the game is a bonus on top of two comedians riffing.
It lands with the show back in front of a crowd. Story Warz returned to the Comedy Store with Oakerson against Gomez, as covered earlier. Anyone buying a ticket now knows exactly how the sausage gets prepped, straight from the guy prepping it.
