Steve Hernandez has a debut hour, Fat! Mexican! Queer?
The LA comedy fixture finally has a special, and he walked through how he built it.
Steve Hernandez is putting out his first special next week. It is called Fat! Mexican! Queer?, and he talks through the whole thing on The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 305.
The Comedy Bureau's framing is that this is long overdue. Their writeup calls Hernandez one of a very select handful of names synonymous with LA comedy of this era, and says he is well overdue for a debut special. When a scene's own chroniclers describe someone that way, the lack of an hour on a platform starts to look less like a gap in the resume and more like a gap in the system.
What the episode covers
The conversation goes into the nitty gritty of how Hernandez built the hour. It also covers his rise through the Los Angeles comedy scene as a bi-poly-queer Mexican comedian, and his other job, running what The Comedy Bureau calls one of LA's most revered rooms.
That second part matters more than it sounds. The people who book and run the good rooms in a city tend to be the ones everybody else credits and nobody else films. Hernandez has been the guy in the back of the room for other comedians' breakthroughs. Now he has his own hour, and the title is doing the work up front, three labels and a question mark, which tells you roughly how the hour handles them.
What we do not know yet
The Comedy Bureau writeup does not name a platform or a release date beyond next week, so if you want it the day it lands, the Field Report episode is the place that will tell you first. Ep. 305 is up now.
If you only know Hernandez as a name that other LA comics say with respect, this is the week that changes. The hour arrives next week.
