Sam Morril says calling his girlfriend an idiot helps

The We Might Be Drunk co-host broke down his fighting style on Lauren Compton's First Date.

Sam Morril has a relationship theory and it is not a warm one. On his second appearance on First Date with Lauren Compton, the We Might Be Drunk co-host said how a couple fights matters more than anything else. His method is to stay calm and, as he put it, calmly say mean shit sometimes, up to and including bluntly calling his girlfriend an idiot. He claims it is good for the relationship.

She, for the record, fights the other way. Morril said she gets wild during arguments and that the two of them have worked through it. They met on Hinge a few months ago. She is a single mom with a 6-year-old son and a creative director at a makeup company, and she is the one who was laughing loudly at the bar while he bombed at that 60th birthday gig in Corfu, trying to warm the crowd up for him.

The silent treatment problem

Compton offered the opposite approach. She said she used to go days without speaking when upset, refusing to say what was wrong even when asked directly. Morril said that annoys him. Compton added that she went to therapy and quit because therapists wanted to talk about her childhood, including the time she let the cat out at age 9 and locked up emotionally. Morril pointed out that this is the exact pattern the therapist was trying to get at. Compton is married now and says they do not fight anymore, partly because her husband does not like the cold shoulder.

The rest of the episode is Morril doing the math on turning 40. He has never lived with a romantic partner, which he blames on bad roommate situations in New York, and he says he has commitment phobia from watching friends jump into bad relationships. He is considering having kids with his girlfriend. Mark Normand's advice on the subject, per Morril, was that you want the mom to be a sane person.

There is also a confession that he accidentally said I love you to her son before he said it to her, then joked his way out by comparing the L-word to a slur because saying it has always ended badly for him. She laughed and the fight ended, which is roughly his whole thesis in one story.

The episode is titled Why Do Women Give The Silent Treatment? and it lands alongside Morril's Netflix special Incorrect, out September 29th. He told Compton he is at 20 to 30 minutes of new material and building a new hour for the road. Tour dates are at sammorril.com.
