Theo Von's Netflix hour is live, announced in five words
No trailer push, no tour dates, just a post tagging Netflix and Netflix Is A Joke.
Theo Von's new Netflix hour is out, and the man did not exactly roll out a campaign for it. The announcement was one post, five words, a praying hands emoji, and two tags.
"Ayyyyy we r live" is the whole thing, with @Netflix and @NetflixIsAJoke attached and a link.
Ayyyyy we r live
No tour news, no hard sell
That is the part worth clocking. A lot of specials land with a week of clips, a podcast tour, a run of dates bolted onto the bottom of every post. Von's drop came with none of that in the post. No cities, no ticket link, no quote from a review. Just the confirmation that the thing people were waiting on is now sitting on Netflix where anyone can press play.
It fits a guy whose audience already knows where to find him. Von's listeners hear him every week. They do not need a billboard to be told the special is up, they need one line, and he gave them one line.
The buildup was quieter too
We earlier covered the hour getting a title, I'm Doing Fine, and a Netflix date of October 20. The gap between that and this post has been filled with almost nothing from Von himself. The title landed, the date landed, and then the special landed.
What you get, going off the post alone, is an hour from one of the biggest podcast names in comedy arriving with the energy of a text message. No manifesto about the state of stand-up, no shot at anybody, no reply guy bait. For a week where plenty of comics have been using their posts to argue with each other, a comedian simply saying the work is out is its own kind of flex.
The only instruction in the post is the implied one. It is live. Go watch it.
